FCS doesn't just impact any home. It prepares high school students for their own homes. FCS classes, like Life Planning 101, Parenting Decisions, and Adult Living, prepare students for life after high school. However, they also help students get through high school by giving them the tools to help their parents at home, or by helping them find jobs to support their family. FCS classes can also be seen in the home when student cooks and shares a meal with their family, or when a student helps to sew a younger sibling's Halloween costume.
FCS in the school
The students in Family Consumer Sciences classes help the school in many ways. One of the most recent ways was the Foods class catering the Principal interviews. Each night of the interviews, they set up tables with tablecloths and napkins. They then professionally served gourmet food they had cooked for the occasion. Another thing the Foods class does is a Spring Fling Buffet for teachers. FCS classes also contribute quilts and floor plans to the Fine Arts Concert display. Also, classes like Fashion Design give students the opportunity to design clothing to be worn to events, like prom.
fcs in the community
FCS classes have also impacted the community in several ways. One things that happens in the Adult Living class is a community preschool. For a month, the students plan activities, snacks, and crafts for the younger kids of the community, This preschool is not only fun, but the kids get to learn things, too. In the class Textiles, students sew quilts, and learn to knit. They can then give their quilts and knitted goods to family or friends in the community.
FCCLA in the home
Family is the main focus of FCCLA. So, FCCLA affects the home in many ways. FCCLA projects, like STAR, give students the opportunity to be responsible, and this responsibility will also be present in the home through that students actions. National Programs, like Families First, Student Body, and FACTS, teach students to be strong family members, and make healthy decisions as a a family.
FCCLA in the school
FCCLA is starting to be a very dominant presence in our school. Our chapter is getting involved with other school activities to support healthy choices. One such event we have helped with is the Walk to School. Students walk to school for one day, and are treated to healthy breakfasts when they get there. Our school recieved a grant from Fuel up to Play 60, and our FCCLA Chapter got to plan the activities with the grant. We taught elementary students about healthy choices, and taught them some fun active games. During the week of Halloween, FCCLA members went and talked to elementary students about Halloween safety. During FCCLA Week, the whole school is involved in FCCLA related activities. Things that seem like games teach the students about certain aspects of FCCLA.
FCCLA in the community
One thing our chapter loves to do is activities out in the community. We love to get the community involved. Through community activities, we are able to tell the community about the charities we are working for. Many of community helped with our food drive for the Knox County Food Pantry. Most of our community goes out of their way to help support our fundraiser to help our charities for the year. During Pink Out Fundraisers everyone participates every year. Another part of the community that gets really involved are the parents of our members. They get to learn about FCCLA through their kids. Other community members step up to help chaperon, or judge STAR events at Districts or State.
